What to Expect in Smith Mountain Lake Triathlon 2022

Welcome to the Smith Mountain Lake Triathlon for 2022! Join the April 30th triathlon staged in the beautiful Smith Mountain Lake State Park—1235 State Park Road in Huddleston. Plan your days and find the perfect place to stay for this event! Smith Mountain Lake offers various options for lodging. The race is also open to novices.

SML Triathlon 2022: 3 Things to Expect

1. Registration

Take advantage of the early registration discount on the registration fee on or before April 25th. All prices will increase from April 26th onwards.

2. Race Information

Kinetic Multisports administrates this event and are USA Triathlon sanctioned. This guide gives you brief details of the race and how to avoid penalties. Registration for this event is non-refundable, and insurance is available upon registration if you need to cancel. USA Triathlon requires athletes to purchase a one-day license or have a current membership. Purchase the license when you register for $15 for adults and $10 for kids under 18. Annual membership only costs $50.

An email will be sent on Wednesday or Thursday before the race to include last-minute information. Lastly, the speed limit inside the park is 25mph.

Order of events:

April 29th

• Time: 5-7 pm 
• Location: Smith Mountain Lake State Park, Swim Area Pavilion (Race Site)
• Pre-Race Meeting: 6 pm – Race Site

April 30th (Race Day)

• Time: 7-8:15 am
• Location: Smith Mtn. Lake State Park, Swim Area Pavilion (Race Site)
• Pre-Race Meeting: 8:45 am at the beach.

A photo ID is required for athletes to pick up their race packets. What’s great is that taking a photo using your phone will suffice. Pre-race meeting will be on Friday at 6 pm, before the race. For first-timers, this is your best chance to ask your questions if you have them. The second meeting will be brief, 15 minutes before the race start in the morning.

3. Novice Athletes

Though they no longer have a Novice division, all races start with a time trial to start, one at a time, and this gives you a chance to start at your own pace. Plus, they do offer a nervous swimmer swim cap. Make sure to get this upon packet pick-up if you feel uncomfortable about the swim.
